While visiting John Chow dot Com I read about an interesting service that tracks what visitors do on your site.
The Service is called Crazy Egg. What the service does is track where visitors are clicking on your website.
Now, an astute webmaster may say, "I can just check my server logs for that sort of information," and they would be right. What New Egg offers to get you to sign up is a little bit more usefull.
For example, you can set up multiple tests accross your website.
You get a graphic "heat map" representation of where people are clicking
The "free" version only works up until you acquire 5,000 clicks and there are a few pay options as well.
I'm trying it out right now on the free plan. I'll post some images and data when I am done.
One thing tht the service does not do is track what individual advs people are clicking on, it will just say "clicked on Google ads" or words to that effect.
Either way, this will give the webmaster on the go a quick and easy way to see what does (and does not) work on their website.
UPDATE
You have to enter each page into the CrazyEgg system for tracking to work. Right now, only my Blog's homepage is being tracked. This is not the "good" service I had envissioned. I'll keep my eye on this "free" trial while it lasts (next 5,000 visitors to my main blog page) and then I'll probably just forget about it.
Even though being able to track each page is a good idea, if you are using blogging software, adding the code to every page can be problematic.
UPDATE 2
I'm watching the hits come in (and the clicks) and I'm disappointed at what I am seeing.
In the "Dashboard" view of my website I see 25 clicks, but only 12 show. If someone clicks a link on a page other then my index page it gets counted and shows up briefly in the dashboard, but then it goes away!
While I was watching, someone clicked the link to NBC.com in one of my stories and it showed up in a different color on the link list in Dashboard... Then, after a few minutes it went away!
If this information *is* being tracked, why would it go away? A lot of clicking goes on when people get past my index page.
It's looking more and more like this is a dud...
