'When we were first introduced to the character of John Locke on ABC's Lost we met a man who was a survivor. He was the man who entered the jungle with a knife and came back with a boar. What happened to him? Why does everyone play him like a fiddle?
I had great hopes for the character of John Locke. In his first flashback we learned he was a gamer! We also knew he worked in a cubicle but we did not yet know it was just a box company.
By the end of that episode we also found he out he was in a wheel chair prior to the plane crash and that he had a very strong will, evidenced by his line, "Don't tell me what I can't do!"
On the island, John continued with the tough hunter persona. After a while he took Boone with him on hunts. Then, something happened.
John encountered the monster and became far more spiritual. He was on a quest to follow the island's lead.
When he found the hatch, he dug it out.
When he and Boone found the plane, his legs gave way and he sacrificed Boone to the island.
After blowing the hatch wide-open he descended and met Desmond.
He felt he had "arrived" at his destination, his "purpose" in life, so to speak.
At the end of Season Two he had lost his faith and caused the destruction of the hatch to occur.
Along the way, we learned a bit more about him from his flashbacks. We still do not know how he lost the ability to walk but we do know the following:
For such a strong and willful character, he is very easy to manipulate.
1) His mom manipulated him to get money from his dad.
2) His dad manipulated him to get a kidney.
3) His dad manipulated him *again* to get money.
4) Henry Gale (Ben) manipulated him into not pressing the button.
5) Sawyer manipulated him into giving him all of the guns.
6) A young cop manipulated him into giving him access to the "compound."
The list goes on...
Why is it that the character who was the "rock" of season one became the "fiddle" of seasons two and three?
I'm hoping that Locke becomes strong again. I also want to know how he lost his ability to walk.
The flashbacks in season two episode three were a bit of a waste for me, unless they are a lead-in to something big happening. Maybe a showdown at the compound between the members and the police?
I don't know. All I do know is that when Locke was revealed as a gamer in season one, he became "my man" and I just hate to see "my man" turned into a fiddle.
